Independent game studio

We build games, and the technology that makes them possible.

Far Beyond is making Stars Beyond, a multiplayer space game, and building Horizon, the open-source game server behind it.

Stars Beyond

Forge alliances and rule the stars.

A multiplayer space game about building, exploring and conquering a vast galaxy. Ships aren't fixed models: each one is assembled from up to hundreds of thousands of parts that crews build, repair and lose in battle, live, together, while the ship flies.

  • Ships built and rebuilt part by part, in real time
  • Crews working on the same ship at once
  • Built in Unreal Engine 5, on our own server technology

Technology

Open source, built for scale

Big multiplayer worlds need infrastructure that most studios can't build alone. We build ours in the open, so other developers can use it too.

Horizon

A high-performance game server written in Rust. Game logic lives in hot-reloadable plugins, separate from networking and player management, so teams can focus on gameplay.

  • Plugin-first, event-driven design
  • GORC: replication by distance and relevance
  • Apache 2.0 licensed

Atlas

A routing layer that sits in front of Horizon servers. It takes on encryption and moves players between server regions, so game servers can spend their time on the game.

  • Offloads encrypted connections
  • Routes players across regions
  • Scales separately from game servers

TerraForge

Procedural voxel terrain for Unreal Engine: worlds generated in chunks and stored efficiently enough to explore at scale.

  • Procedural generation in chunks
  • Memory-efficient voxel storage
  • Built in C++ for Unreal Engine

About

A small studio with big ambitions

Far Beyond LLC is an independent studio based in the United States. We started with one question: what would a space game look like if the technology underneath didn't set the limits? Answering it means building the game and the systems it runs on, and sharing the systems with everyone.
